BIRDS

FIRST AID FOR BIRDS

STOP THINK LOOK AND LISTEN THINK AGAIN

Many baby birds will leave the nest before they can fly.  They may look abandoned but their parents should be back to feed them.
If it is in danger from traffic, cats, magpies, strong sunlight, rain etc.  Move it to a safer spot nearby so the parents can find it.

If it is a pinkie (no feathers, eyes closed) keep it warm.  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GIVE IT FLUIDS YOU COULD DROWN IT.  Get it to a rescue as soon as possible.

Cat attacks should always be treated with antibiotics because germs from claws and bites can poison their blood; wounds are not always visible.
A vet should treat serious injuries.

Is it stunned or playing dead?  If so put it into a well ventilated closed box out of draughts and strong sunlight, check it after a while, sometimes it can take a couple of hours before coming round.  Open the box outside away from obstacles and see if it can fly.

Bird in the house? Close curtains, doors to other rooms then leave a door open to the outside the bird will fly to the light outside.

If you are sure the bird needs help, put it into a well-ventilated snug box, with kitchen roll, or an old clean cloth.  Avoid making rapid or sharp movements.  If you feel that you can look after it feed it with moist raw mincemeat, whitebait.  Birdseed egg mix (from pet shops) mix with SA-37.

  • NEVER TRY TO GIVE IT A DRINK BY HAND YOU WILL PROBABLY DROWN IT.

  • NEVER GIVE IT BREAD, MILK, ALCOHOL OR EARTHWORMS SOME ARE TOXIC.

  • NEVER GIVE A DEHYDRATED BIRD WATER IT MAKES THEIR CONDITION WORSE GIVE THEM INTERNATIONAL RE-HYDRATING FLUID.

  • DO NOT PUT BIRDS ON HAY OR STRAW IT CAN LEAD TO RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS.
