WINGS & THINGS
ISSUE 4 June 2000 to August 2001 we have dealt with 730 creatures our busiest year yet. That number includes 5 chinchillas, 7 bats, 135 hedgehogs, 7 rabbits, 3 foxes, 1 dog, 7 cats, 1 goat, 13 squirrels, 2 weasels, 4 mice, 9 ferrets/polecats, 1 chipmunk, 3 frogs, 2 newts, the rest are various birds.
Once again we've had some 1sts a corn bunting, a blackcap an Indian
runner and a cross breed duck Anyway she took a liking to me and I managed to catch her in record time, due to the fact she was weak, underweight and dehydrated. She is now in the care of an expert being rehabilitated. We are also looking after another 4 budgies and 6 cockatiels for an old lady until she is in a position to take care of them again. These are not included in the 730. We found the owner of the Indian Runner duck. The cross breed came from Beighton in June. I love this duck, she will stay until next year (maybe forever if I can sweet talk Midge!) After all he's kept two of the five chickens that we had in at different times. The goat is living with Peggy the 3 legged cow at Mill House Sanctuary. The chipmunk was deliberately let out of its enclosure along with two others. A cat killed the other two, the cats owner phoned us very upset with her cat. Midge went and managed to catch the remaining one which is no easy task and then it was reunited with it's owner. Three of the chinchillas are living a life of bliss in a 5 star home with Sharon at Clowne, they had come together so we wanted them to stay in a family group, it took some time to find the right home from them. The other two are also very lucky to be living with Emma at Chesterfield, they will be treated better than I treat Midge. She's had chinchillas off us before so we knew they would be happy there.
The ferrets and polecats are all in loving homes. The next two came from the police at 11 at night. Morse and Lewis had been thrown off a balcony from a block of flats. They were very nervous at first. Then after a couple of days, they were bossing the dogs about and had twisted us round their paws. They went to live next door to the policeman who brought them to us. The next was a young adult cat who came on Christmas Eve. His owner had died sometime before and the neighbours had been feeding it until the owners relatives cleared the house out which they did only to leave the cat. He found a new home with a very nice gentleman from Baslow. On Christmas day a tabby cat arrived, by now the dogs had started to purr! Luckily her owner was found.
Then on 4th January we had a beautiful ginger tom. He loved walking on
the fax machine so it would make a noise. One of the customers
from Tesco, Abbeydale (where I work) re-homed him. I was very
tempted to keep him, I was sad to see him go.
